Functional Fillers

We carry a full line of functional fillers, minerals and pigments. These products can enhance the physical characteristics and properties of your coatings, plastics, adhesives and allied applications. Some examples would be adding abrasion resistance, gloss control, chemical resistance and flattening in coatings and heat resistance, and flame retardancy and impact resistance in various polymers.


Specialty Minerals Inc. (SMI) produces high-performance minerals: talc, precipitated calcium carbonate, ground calcium carbonate, lime, and dolomite.


  • Ground Calcium Carbonate Limestone (GCC) - A common sedimentary rock composed primarily of the calcium carbonate mineral, calcite (CaCO3).

  • Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) PCC stands for Precipitated Calcium Carbonate, also known as purified, refined or synthetic calcium carbonate. It has the same chemical formula as other types of calcium carbonate, such as limestone, marble and chalk.

  • Dolomite - The mineral dolomite is commonly found in deposits of a sedimentary rock called dolostone. Specialty Minerals Inc. (SMI) owns a superior deposit of high brightness, true dolomite in Canaan, Connecticut.

    Talc Products - Produces ground talc products in Barretts, Montana, using ore from its two nearby mines.

    • For plastic reinforcement, SMI products are offered as small as 0.8 micron for superior reinforcement. MicroTuff® AG and MicroTalc® products are widely used in polyolefins for automotive and appliance parts. For blown and cast films, ABT®, Polybloc® and the high clarity Optibloc® are talc-based antiblocks.
    • The Talcron® and Sericron® talc series are a range of products for paints and coatings. Cercron® talcs are used in specialty ceramic applications. Select MicroTalc® and UltraTalc® talc products meet high purity standards required for use in foods, pharmaceuticals and body powders.

    Natural Bentonites and Organo Clays - AMCOL Specialty Minerals, the world's largest producer of smectite clays, specifically, sodium and calcium montmorillonites (bentonites), hectorites, and magnesium aluminum silicates. AMCOL Specialty Minerals sources, mines and processes smectite clay, both hydro classified and dry processed, for use in Paints & Coatings, Foundries, and specialty household and consumer applications. The most common members of the smectite mineral group are hectorite and montmorillonite. The clay products are useful in gelling, binding, thickening, stabilizing, plasticizing, coagulating, emulsifying, absorbing and controlling rheology. The clays increase viscosity, stabilize emulsions and modify the consistency and feel of products. This range of products also produces excellent suspending and dispersing properties. The clays change the rheological properties of the formulations, providing a smoother texture and excellent application properties due to their thixotropic characteristics.

    Unimin Corp supplies NEPHELINE SYENITE, MICROCRYSTALLINE SILICA to the paint and coatings, plastics, rubber, paper and construction industries.


    • MINEX® - Micronized nepheline syenite specialty filler for paints, coatings, adhesives and plastics.

    U.S Silica is the leading producer of high quality ground and unground silica sand.


    • Ground Silica grades - SIL-CO-SIL®, ground silica, available in more than ten uniform grades, ranging from 120 to 400 mesh in topsize.
    • MIN-U-SIL®, micronized silica, available in five grades, ranging from 40 down to 5 microns in topsize.
    • Unground Silica – U.S. Silica's whole grain, unground sand is available in a wide variety of grain shapes and size distributions to meet any application requirement.  At each mining location, raw material is processed, screened and graded to assure the finest quality sand.




    • Recycled Glass Powders:
      • VCAS White Pozzolans- VCAS™ Pozzolans are made from Vitrified Calcium Aluminio-Silicate material having low alkali content, consistent chemistry, uniform color and a wholly amorphous (glassy) state caused by rapid water quenching of the extruded molten material. After primary sizing and drying, the feed stock is finely ground and processed through high efficiency classifiers to produce a fine White powder with quality assured physical properties. The consistent chemical composition and tightly controlled particle size distribution offers excellent repeatability of properties in concrete applications. VCAS™ Pozzolans are "green" construction materials made from industrial by-products that help contribute to the sustainability of cement and concrete.

      • CS Post Consumer Glass- CS Glass powders are functional glass fillers and extenders made from 100% recycled glass, primarily sourced from curbside pick-up, windshields, and other sources of glass. The glass content exceeds 99% and is a light tan colored powder with a uniform particle size distribution. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy confirms that the CS Glass powders are fully amorphous and contain no crystalline silica.

        CS Glass powders provide a relatively clean post consumer filler for polymer systems where color is not important. The glass powders will contain traces of organic residues as well as label remnants. However, Vitro Minerals' unique processing system and true particle size classification converts any impurities to powder sizes below 100 mesh with an overall size of 98% minus 325 mesh for CS-325.

      • LA Low Alkali Glass- LA Glass powders are functional fillers and extenders produced from post-industrial low alkali glass feedstocks. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy confirms that the LA Glass calcium aluminosilicate powders are fully amorphous and contain no crystalline silica. The low alkali glass chemistry results in chemical inertness, making LA Glass resistant to blooming, blistering, or chemical degradation in harsh environments.

        LA Glass powders enhance a wide range of paints, coatings, plastics, and adhesives. High consistent brightness, tint retention and stain/scrub resistance can be achieved in most paint and coating systems. LA Glass has very low oil absorption, and can be easily dispersed in water or solvent based systems.
    • Recycled Glass Sands:
      • Concrete Sands- Vitro's CS and MG Glass Sands are functional fine aggregate materials made with uniform grain size distributions from 100% recycled glass: CS Glass from bottle glass and a greenish tan in color; and MG Glass from plate glass and white in color. CS and MG Glass Sands are free of crystalline silica and provide a clean recycled sand for concrete, polymer concrete, mortars, and other similar systems. The products are very low in lead (Pb) content and free of label remnants and other post consumer debris.
